Lance Tango is a Los Angeles based psychotherapist who incorporates therapeutic strategies with principles of social justice, helping clients heal from the residual effects of social oppression and relational trauma. Along with facilitating empowering conversations with individual clients, Lance also works with couples and organizations to cultivate improved interpersonal dynamics by exposing and dismantling entrenched patterns of power and privilege.

Christelyn Karazin is the co-author of “Swirling: How to Date, Mate and Relate, Mixing Race, Culture and Creed,” and is the publisher of the popular blog, Beyond Black & White, geared toward black women dating interracially. She’s also the brand ambassador for InterracialDatingCentral.com

Maria T. Allocco is a writer, artist and teacher born after a South Korean woman and an Italian Catholic priest fell in love. An Academy of American Poets Prize recipient and Voices of Our Nation alum, Maria’s work has been featured on radio, and most recently in the book Pariahs: Writing From Outside The Margins. Maria co-founded the bay area’s first mixed-race meditation group, and the writing group Mixed Writes. She teaches yoga to youth.

Jackson Bliss is a hapa writer of (non)fiction. His work has appeared in Tin House, Antioch Review, Boston Review, ZYZZYVA, Kenyon Review, Fiction, Santa Monica Review, Quarterly West, African American Review, Fiction International, STAND, Quarter After Eight, Connecticut Review, Daily Dot, and Kartika Review, among others. He is a lecturer at UC Irvine and was the 1st Runner-up for the 2013 Poets & Writer’s California Writer’s Exchange Award in fiction.

Leslie Li is the director of the feature-length documentary — The Kim Loo Sisters — about a jazz vocal quartet popular in the 1930s and 40s who became the first Asian American act to star in Broadway musical revues. The “Kimmies” as the sisters were called are her mother and her three maternal aunts. Leslie is also the author of Bittersweet: A Novel (Tuttle Publishing); Daughter of Heaven: A Memoir with Earthly Recipes (Arcade Publishing); and Just Us Girls: The Companion Book to The Kim Loo Sisters (Four Seasons Press).

Victoria Namkung is a hapa Los Angeles-based journalist, essayist, and cultural commentator. Her writing has been published in the Los Angeles Times, VICE, Washington Post, USA Today, and Huffington Post. She currently appears on episodes of Mike Epps’ AOL Originals series, That’s Racist. Her debut novel, The Things We Tell Ourselves, examines the damage that one generation can do to the next and the compromises we make between our ideals and life’s realities.

Joy Huang Stoffers was raised in East Brunswick, NJ, by a Taiwanese mother and a Caucasian father. At the age of six, she wrote, illustrated, and promptly recycled her first short story. Since then she dreamed of becoming a novelist. She holds a BA in English from Rutgers University and an MA in Creative Writing from Newcastle University.

Eleanor Glewwe is the author of the middle-grade fantasy novel Sparkers (Viking, 2014) and its forthcoming companion, Wildings (Viking, Nov. 2016). She lives in Los Angeles, where she is a graduate student in linguistics.

Katrina Goldsaito’s children’s book, The Sound of Silence, comes out from Little Brown in August 2016. Previous lifetimes include: on-camera TV journalist at NHK-World; essayist for National Geographic, The Christian Science Monitor, NPR, and The Japan Times; once unicorn; actress; fishbird; bigfoot researcher. Maria Leonard Olsen is a biracial woman whose parents were forbidden by law to marry in Maryland in the early 1960s. She is a lawyer, journalist, radio show host and author of the children’s book, “Mommy, Why’s Your Skin So Brown?” and two others. A UVA Law School graduate, Maria served in the Clinton Administration’s Justice Department, fostered newborns awaiting adoption, and has been on the boards of Children’s National Medical Center BOV, among others.

Veda Stamps is the author of acclaimed novel Flexible Wings. Stamps has spent much of her adult life working on projects that empower diverse youth to achieve their dreams. Flexible Wings, her first novel, is a creative extension of her work as co-owner of a city planning firm. She currently lives with her husband, daughter, and three little dogs in southern California.

I grew up in Los Angeles, entertainment capital of the world. Sun, water, fun, convertibles…this is a beautiful place, but it is hard on hair. Participating in all of these everyday activities was a privilege, but try blow-drying your hair to style — now that was a nuisance, not to mention bad for my hair. In a place obsessed with looks, my life was hell. My hair is naturally curly, but I never would wear it out because I had to use too many products to get the look. I had to search from one end of the store to the other to concoct a combination for my “unruly hair.” That was not only a pain, but expensive too! Lucky for me I met Wendi.

I am mixed. I have coarse, tightly curled hair on one side of the family tree and straight, limp hair on the other. Growing up on the east coast, there were black neighborhoods, white neighborhoods, a puerto rican neighborhood… everything was segregated. Even the stores were segregated: black section, white section; no in between. When kim and I met we were laughing about our common problem. The idea of making our own product seemed silly at first, but two years later, MIXED CHICKS was on the map.

Jennifer Frappier can be seen in national commercials for companies such as: Anheuser-Busch, Comcast, iChooseAdoption, McDonald’s, Microsoft, Skechers and Sony PSP. Jennifer is excited to share her first documentary. Chill is a film that introduces “social egg freezing” and follows the modern-day journey to motherhood. Jennifer’s egg freezing story has been featured in the Italian fashion magazine Gracia, on FOX, KTLA’s Health Smart, Australia’s Sunday Night, ABC’s 20/20 with Aditi Roy and on the front page of the Los Angeles Times.

Kevin Maillard is Professor of Law at Syracuse University and a contributing editor to the New York Times. He specializes in Family Law, Constitutional Law, and Popular Culture. He writes for The Atlanticand provides on-air commentary to ABC News and MSNBC. He is the co-editor of Loving v. Virginia in a Post-Racial World (with Rose Villazor, Cambridge 2012). An enrolled member of the Seminole Nation of Oklahoma, he is the author of the forthcoming children’s book, FRY BREAD.

Devin Wash was born and raised in Los Angeles and graduated from the University of California Santa Barbara with a BA in Economics. He obtained his CA Real Estate license and is now a mortgage broker with Rosano Partners in downtown LA. He specializes in debt and equity placement for all types of commercial real estate.

Kyla Kupferstein Torres is an educator and writer in New York City. Kyla has broad experience in education; she has held positions at top schools, and created college preparation programs targeted at low-income and first-generation students in high-poverty communities. Her writing is concerned with issues of identity and how our personal stories inform our choices. She is a frequent consultant to and speaker at education and parenting advocacy groups. She is a member of the Mixed Remixed Festival Board of Directors.

A short film about three Japanese women who emigrated to the US in the 1950s as war brides of American men. Their recollections are further refracted through the eyes of their Japanese-American daughters — a photojournalist, a newspaper editor, and a freelance journalist. Personal photographs and visuals from US archival sources help bring to life this fascinating episode in US history.

Lucy Craft, Kathryn Tolbert and Karen Kasmauski jointly directed the film. Lucy is a TV producer in Tokyo with CBS News. Kathryn is an editor with The Washington Post. Karen – formerly with the National Geographic – is now a freelance photographer and educator.

Lucy has worked as a freelance journalist in Tokyo for over 30 years. Her work can be seen/heard on CBS News and NPR. “Fall Seven” is her first foray into film.

Born on a U.S. Naval base in Yokosuka, Japan, Karen Kasmauski is the daughter of Steve, a career sailor who served in three wars, and Emiko, who still lives near the base in Norfolk, Va. Inspired by her father’s love of photography, Karen spent most of her career as a contract photographer at National Geographic, where she broke new ground covering fields from medicine to migration. Her work has taken her to every continent except Antarctica. This documentary is an attempt to better understand a mother who often seemed more like a neighbor than family.

Kathryn has worked for The Associated Press, The Boston Globe and The Washington Post as a reporter and editor. When she worked for the AP in Tokyo, and later for The Washington Post’s Tokyo Bureau, she often wrote about Japanese women. The war bride story is one she has known she should tell, but looking into the lives of others comes more naturally than delving into her own mother’s. Working with Lucy, Karen and the Blue Chalk team has made it possible to finally tell her story.

LOS ANGELES, CA-April 8, 2016 – The Mixed Remixed Festival, the nation’s largest gathering of mixed-race and multiracial families and people, will take place at the Japanese American National Museum in downtown Los Angeles (100 N. Central Avenue), June 10-11, 2016.

Now in its third year, the Festival celebrates stories of multiracial Americans and families, the fastest growing demographic in the U.S. A free public event, the Festival brings together film and book lovers, innovative and emerging artists, and multiracial and multicultural families and individuals for workshops, readings, performances, and film screenings.

The Mixed Remixed Festival attracted close to 700 people from across the country last year and featured dozens of writers, scholars and performers including Comedy Central’s Al Madrigal and New York Times best-selling author Jamie Ford.

The Festival, a non-profit arts organization, is produced by The New York Times best-selling writer, Heidi Durrow, and a talented team of volunteers.

“It’s exciting to finally see mixed people and families in mainstream media and to connect with each other on-line,” says Durrow who calls herself an Afro-Viking because she is African-American and Danish. “But the Festival is the only nationwide cultural arts event where we get to meet each other and network.”

Registration is now open for the third annual Mixed Remixed Festival, a free event that is open to the public. The complete Festival schedule can be found online at www.mixedremixed.org.

FESTIVAL HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE:

The Festival hosts the largest West Coast Loving Day Celebration, Saturday, June 11, 2016, at 6:30 p.m. with the annual Storyteller’s Prize presentation and live show. The Festival will present the Storyteller’s Prize to film and TV star Taye Diggs and his collaborator, Shane Evans, for their ground-breaking children’s book Mixed Me as part of a dynamic live show featuring comedians, musicians, and spoken-word poets.
Families can enjoy interactive craft activities as well storytelling events as part of the JANM Free Family Day.
The Festival will present several notable short films including the award-winning Fall Seven Times Get Up Eight: Japanese War Brides (dirs. Kraft, Kasmauski, Tolbert), a documentary about three Japanese women who immigrated to the US to raise their Hapa kids. Chill (dir. Jennifer Frappier), a press-darling documentary about egg-freezing makes its debut at Mixed Remixed. Immediately following each screening, there will be a Q & A session with the filmmakers.
The Festival includes author readings by New York Times bestselling author Jamie Ford (Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet; Songs of Willow Frost); Sunil Yapa, the author of the breakout national bestseller, The Heart Is A Muscle the Size of Your Fist; Natashia Deon, author of the acclaimed debut novel, Grace; the celebrated writer and activist Willy Wilkinson; and many others. The Festival is also pleased to present Skylight Books as the Festival’s official bookseller.
More than a dozen esteemed panelists will speak on diverse topics related to the mixed-race and multicultural experience, including: award-winning writer Faith Adiele and two-time Peabody Award winner Dmae Roberts who has released her important new memoir.

Created by and for up-and-coming Hip-Hop artists, enthusiasts, and new timers from all five elements, The Best Thing Since…Series is fostering community at the open mic, inspiring conversation by thought-provoking artists, and working up a sweat on the dance floor. Using hip hop, we’ll explore the complexities of navigating multiple identities. Beyond the socially-constructed confines of race, what constructs identity? How do we code-switch across the multiple worlds we exist in? Through the five elements of hip hop, we’ll have a multi-dimensional interactive conversation that will foster self-reflection, expression, and community. More than a show, The Best Thing Since…Series aims to reinforce the fifth element of Hip-Hop: knowledge. How do we do this? By utilizing the other four: Graffiti art, Breaking, Emceeing and DJing.

Multiracial Folks Celebrate Day at UCLA

Don’t miss this wonderful multiracial conference at UCLA. The Mixed Student Union is the only club on the UCLA campus dedicated to students who identify as mixed race, multiethnic, multicultural, or transnational. Our annual conference aims to connect various mixed heritage students and communities throughout California and focuses on the various perspectives that every individual brings to the greater mixed community. We hope this event will allow students, faculty, and other members of the community to come together and discuss issues affecting those of mixed heritage. We loved having you at our conference two years ago, and we hope you can make it!

The conference will take place on Saturday, April 30th, 2016 from 10am – 4pm at the James West Alumni Center on the UCLA campus. There will be a keynote speaker, performance, and various workshops throughout the day. The event is open to the public, and free. Breakfast and lunch will be provided, with registration (link here).
